Mini Whip Antenna

What is it?

The original PA0RDT Mini Whip is a very simple yet highly effective active receive antenna for the VLF, longwave (LW), medium wave (MW), and shortwave (SW) range. It consists of a small metal plate and a buffer amplifier.

How it works:

The amplifier features:

Very high input impedance – implemented using a JFET as a source follower, which senses the voltage between the small metal plate and ground

Low output impedance – implemented using an NPN transistor as an emitter follower, designed to drive 50 ohm coaxial cable

This design allows the antenna to perform exceptionally well even in electrically noisy environments or locations where space is limited.
