What is it? This VHF transistor radio is based on the popular TA7358 front-end FM amplifier/oscillator IC, which supplies an intermediate frequency of 10.7 MHz. The IF is then processed with discrete transistors, making it very easy to demodulate amplitude modulation (AM) for the Air Band (118 136 MHz). Tuning & Controls: The radio uses two varicap diodes for frequency control, adjusted by two variable resistors: Tune main tuning across the band Fine Tune precise adjustment to zero in on weak or drifting signals Additional controls include: Squelch Control silences background noise; audio amp activates only when a transmission is received Volume Control adjusts output level Oscillator Tap Connector: A dedicated connector allows you to tap into the oscillator signal and connect an external frequency counter, which then acts as a digital frequency display for the radio a great upgrade for serious aviation listeners. What is it?
This VHF transistor radio is based on the popular TA7358 front-end FM amplifier/oscillator IC, which supplies an intermediate frequency of 10.7 MHz. The IF is then processed with discrete transistors, making it very easy to demodulate amplitude modulation (AM) for the Air Band (118–136 MHz).
Tuning & Controls:
The radio uses two varicap diodes for frequency control, adjusted by two variable resistors:
Tune – main tuning across the band
Fine Tune – precise adjustment to zero in on weak or drifting signals
Additional controls include:
Squelch Control – silences background noise; audio amp activates only when a transmission is received
Volume Control – adjusts output level
Oscillator Tap Connector:
A dedicated connector allows you to tap into the oscillator signal and connect an external frequency counter, which then acts as a digital frequency display for the radio – a great upgrade for serious aviation listeners.
Why did I make it?
All credit goes to Rob, who contributed to drawing the PCB and shared it with me. The Air Band has always fascinated me, and I'm always looking to build new radios. So let's build another one.
What makes it special?
Very compact, well-laid-out board
A beginner can easily build it in a couple of hours
Powered by a 9V battery
Very sensitive front end – excellent reception of aircraft communications
Parts are readily available (not included)
What's Included?
PCB only. All components (TA7358, transistors, varicaps, resistors, capacitors, pots, etc.) are easily available from electronics suppliers. Enclosure, battery, and frequency counter not included.
